Chelsea’s 1937/38 season was one of early promise and eventual frustration. Managed by Leslie Knighton, the Blues began the campaign strongly and briefly climbed to the top of the First Division following a 2–1 victory over local rivals Brentford at Stamford Bridge in October. However, their form became increasingly inconsistent as the season progressed, and Chelsea eventually finished in tenth place.
The campaign still produced several memorable occasions. A crowd of more than 75,000 watched Chelsea draw 2–2 with eventual champions Arsenal, while the club recorded an emphatic 6–1 victory over Liverpool. Other notable visitors to Stamford Bridge included Birmingham City, Sunderland, Manchester City, Huddersfield Town and Wolverhampton Wanderers. Chelsea’s FA Cup journey was much shorter, ending in the third round.
George Mills led the club’s scoring charts with 13 league goals, while players such as Vic Woodley, Sam Weaver, Harry Burgess, Peter Buchanan and Dickie Spence were also prominent throughout the season. Stamford Bridge continued to attract some of the largest crowds in English football, reflecting Chelsea’s considerable appeal even when major honours remained elusive.
The surviving Chelsea programmes from 1937/38 offer a fascinating record of this eventful pre-war campaign. Their team line-ups, fixture details, editorial notes and period advertising capture the experience of attending Stamford Bridge during the late 1930s. Issues covering matches against Brentford, Arsenal and leading clubs of the era are particularly evocative, connecting collectors directly with Chelsea’s early history.
Now increasingly scarce, especially in good condition, these programmes preserve much more than match results. Together, they provide a valuable picture of the players, opponents, crowds and matchday culture that defined Chelsea Football Club on the eve of the Second World War.
